Bone Marrow Transplant Unit
The bone marrow transplant unit at Children’s Hospital Karachi provides treatment of choice for conditions like leukemia, thalassemia, aplastic anemia and storage disorders. In presence and support of our highly qualified and experienced team members, we perform autologous and allogenic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Our BMT program director, Dr. Saqib Ansari has 18 years of transplant experience and has been the program director of BMT program at NIBD for four years.
Department of Hematology and Oncology (Pediatrics)
The Hematology and Oncology Faculty at Children’s Hospital Karachi offer consultative services and treat all types of pediatric benign and malignant cancers including Pediatric hematological (blood) disorders and solid tumor cancers. Leukemia, lymphomas, aplastic anemia, immunodeficiency disorders as well as coagulation disorders are frequently treated by our physicians. Department of Genetics & Rare Disorders
The Molecular genetic diagnostic laboratory provides DNA and RNA based molecular testing services for a wide variety of indications, including inherited genetic disorders.
Molecular techniques are used for direct monitoring of disease status and progression. Once a mutation in an affected individual is identified, genetic testing for family member is available, providing crucial information for the provision of genetic counseling and determination of recurrence risk.
The specialized and trained faculty at Children’s Hospital Karachi is privileged to provide treatment to patients with rare disorders including Gaucher’s Disease, MPS, and Pompe disease through enzyme replacement therapies. The Genetics and Rare Disorder Treatment Program is a unique initiative to register and maintain records of patients with rare disorders to figure out epidemiological disease burden in the 3rd world countries.

Chronic Villus Sampling
Chronic Villus Sampling is a prenatal procedure which is used for the diagnosis of fetal cytogenetic, molecular, and biochemical disorders. This is used to avoid the later complications of later prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis. Children’s Hospital Karachi houses research facilities to use CVS in our thalassemia prevention program, where we are currently investing resources to detect thalassemia in fetuses, and work not only towards treatment, but also to find methods to prevent this chronic disease. Our aim is to improve the health and safety of the mother and her fetus in order to make our community healthier.

The Role of Clinical Pharmacy
At Children’s Hospital Karachi (CHK) Clinical pharmacy provides direct patient care that boosts the use of authentic and safe medication and promotes health, wellness, and disease prevention.
Clinical pharmacy at Children’s Hospital Karachi is licensed, temperature controlled and aims to contribute to safe medication use by providing comprehensive management to patients in CHK through ensuring authentic and quality medicines availability. The services include protocols management for chemotherapy, supportive care and ambulatory treatment for co-morbidities, medication information for the medical staff and patients, therapeutic drug monitoring (anticancer agents, anti-infective agents, immunosuppressive drugs in recipients of allogeneic stem cell transplantation), supportive care counseling (nutritional support, pain management, chemotherapy side-effects prophylaxis and treatment), elaboration of therapeutic guidelines and optimal use of economic resources.
